What is Therapy?
Psychotherapy, also called talk therapy or usually just "therapy," is a form of treatment aimed at relieving emotional distress and mental health problems. Provided by any of a variety of trained professionals—psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, or licensed counselors—it involves examining and gaining insight into life choices and difficulties faced by individuals, couples, or families. Therapy sessions refer to structured meetings between a licensed provider and a client with a goal of improving some aspect of their life. Psychotherapy encompasses many types of treatment and is practiced by a range of clinicians using a variety of strategies. The critical aspect is that the client or patient works collaboratively with the therapist and can identify improvement and positive change over time.
Most therapies in wide use have been well-tested and deemed effective. Though it may at first feel difficult to seek out therapy—especially for those of low-income or without comprehensive insurance—the benefits of successful therapy are literally life-changing.

What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) refers to an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress.
According to the theory behind the approach, traumatic and painful memories can cause post-traumatic stress when you don’t process them completely. Then, when sights, sounds, words, or smells trigger those unprocessed memories, you re-experience them.
This re-experiencing or reprocessing leads to less emotional distress and other symptoms associated with Anxiety, Depression, and Post-Traumatic Stress.
EMDR aims to reduce symptoms of trauma by changing how your memories are stored in your brain. In a nutshell, an EMDR therapist does this by leading you through a series of bilateral (side-to-side) eye movements as you recall traumatic or triggering experiences in small segments until those memories no longer cause distress.
While originally developed to treat trauma and PTSD, EMDR may also help relieve symptoms of other mental health concerns, especially those intertwined with past trauma.

Yes, absolutely! Your insurance will pay for both as EMDR Therapy is considered a specialty and so your EMDR therapist will be a supplement to your regular talk therapy.
Most therapists will want to meet once a week at least initially. If you are looking to work on EMDR or trauma work, weekly appointments are recommended to more effectively reach your treatment goals.
We are not a faith-based practice however, our clinicians are well-informed about spiritual and faith-based practices. Your therapist will utilize the language you are most accustomed to assist you in meeting your goals!
