Couples Therapy in Downtown Grand Rapids

Open up your relationship's potential!
The concept of Couples Therapy can feel daunting. As we go through new stages in life, we develop ways to protect ourselves from a world that can be overwhelming. While it’s natural to want to feel safe, we also crave love and connection. When we worry that we will be let down by our partner by our hope for this connection the difficulty in addressing it can feel devastating. Often our desire for intimacy clashes with these protective instincts, it can create conflict. This can be further increased when we experience other pre-existing issues such as depression, ADHD or anxiety. This conflict can be an opportunity to open the door for personal growth and to reduce the symptoms of the diagnosis through relational intervention in Couples Therapy.
Clarity Therapy & Consulting, LLC can help you navigate these feelings with understanding instead of fear. Our expertly trained therapists understand that fears are serving a function to protect us and help both people increase awareness of the cycle of conflict between them. Perhaps the couple may find that they are always having conflicts over the same thing. By learning about this cycle and addressing the conflict they can build deeper connections and lasting intimacy that, for those who it applies, also reduces the distress of pre-existing conditions. If you’re looking for a lifetime of connection and growth you may not have realized was possible then Couples Therapy may be appropriate for you.

FAQ:
WHAT MAKES THE COUPLES THERAPY YOU OFFER DIFFERENT THAN OTHER PRACTICES
We transform the latest research into compassionate, practical experiences in session, using our expertise to deliver lasting results tailored to your unique relationship needs. Couples come in all forms, social needs, and relationship stories. Every day, we draw from our years of experience in working with families of all styles and specific training to support couples as a loving laboratory, honing the skills and techniques we bring to your sessions. In our practice we have therapists with a range of experience and all who have extensive additional training in working with Couples. We understand that many couples attend feel a great deal of risk and so we will seek to connect you with a clinician that is the best fit for your unique story.
What if my partner isn't sure about attending
This can be very common and doesn't mean your partner isn't motivated to address concerns in the relationship or doesn't care. Our couples therapists are relational in their approach, seeking to make therapy a safe space for everyone. If they are willing to attend but are not enthusiastic it doesn't mean that couples therapy will not be successful. Our hope is to support both people.
Aren't all Couples Therapists the same
The most important factor in any therapy intervention has been shown in research again and again to be the relationship between the therapist and the client(s)! It is important that you feel comfortable with the therapist you work with and that you can trust their skills. We suggest you meet with a therapist for a virtual consultation before beginning the process. We encourage you to ask about their approach and to explore the relationship between you and the therapist to see if it feels like a fit.
Additionally, consider the training of the therapist and if they have experience in working with the types of issues you and your partner are struggling with. If one of you has a pre-existing diagnosis, consider their experience in addressing that diagnosis and their training in how that diagnosis may affect couples and families.

Does insurance cover Couples Therapy
Most private insurance plans typically do not cover couples counseling, as it is often not considered “medically necessary.” However, if one or both partners have a pre-existing condition—such as major depression, addiction, bipolar disorder, or ADHD—that impacts the relationship, there may be options for reimbursement. In these cases, if the treatment is medically justifiable to address the diagnosis, then sessions with both people may be medically justified and insurance may cover the costs.
